About this section

The section is curated by Asiya Faheem Ansari, a certified architect, and it approaches decor the way an architect approaches a building: proportion, scale and light come first, and objects come second. That is why many ideas here cost less than you would expect. A rug in the right size, a mirror placed opposite a window or a lamp at the right height often does more than a new sofa.

You will find five kinds of ideas here. Budget and thrifted decor covers pieces that look expensive without being expensive. Living rooms and bedrooms focuses on layout, focal points and styling. Colour, light and texture helps you choose palettes and layer lighting. Seasonal and holiday decor includes festive setups that come down easily afterwards. Entryways and outdoor spaces is about first impressions, from the front door to the porch.

How this section differs from its neighbours: if your room is short on space, start with Small Spaces. If you want to move walls or change the layout itself, that is Architecture. Home Decor is for styling the space as it stands.

Every idea is chosen to be practical in a real home, with real budgets, real families and real daylight, not only in a styled photograph.

Common Questions

How can I make my home look expensive on a budget?

Focus on scale and finish rather than quantity. Use fewer but larger pieces, hang curtains high and wide, swap dated hardware and light fittings, add one statement mirror and keep surfaces uncluttered. Thrifted solid-wood furniture and brass or ceramic accessories often look more expensive than new flat-pack pieces.

How do I choose a colour palette for my home?

Pick one neutral base for walls and large surfaces, one secondary colour for furniture or textiles, and one accent for small items. This is the 60-30-10 approach. Test paint samples on different walls, because the same colour looks different in north- and south-facing light, and check them in the morning and at night.

What size rug should I buy for my living room?

In most living rooms, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and every chair to rest on it. A rug that floats in the middle of the room makes the space feel smaller. As a rough rule, the rug should be wider than the sofa by about 15–20 cm on each side.

How do I make a room feel cozy?

Layer light and texture. Use several warm-toned lamps at different heights instead of a single ceiling light, and mix materials such as wool, linen, wood and ceramic. Soft furnishings, like a throw, cushions or curtains, also absorb sound, which makes a room feel calmer and warmer.

How high should I hang wall art?

Hang art so its centre sits at roughly eye level, about 145–150 cm from the floor. Above a sofa or console, leave around 15–25 cm between the furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one group.
